SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. The White Horse was well known for its 3D sign of a horse facing out into Groat Market. It was a small pub, with a small bar and a rear sitting room. It was owned by Joseph Simpson Arnison, local brewer in the 1870s and 1880s. It then passed into non-brewer hands until 1909, when Arrols then Vaux leased it. The front bar had a simple half-rectangular bar counter. This was changed in 1929 to a semi-octagonal counter attached to the back corner of the bar. Bought by Newcastle Breweries for £12,100 in 1930.There were more alterations in 1933 when the layout was simplified. Closed in the mid 1960s to make way for Thomson House (HER 13501).
