Hotel
SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. In 1897 Constantine & Co took possession of the Crown Hotel. They renovated it to bring it up to the standard of the best new fashioned hotels. The buffet bar 'was not to be beaten for beauty or tastefulness by anything of the kind seen either in or out of London'. The Crown was acquired by Newcastle Assembly Rooms & Hotel Co. Ltd. It closed in 1967 when the company went into liquidation. It stood empty for 10 years. Then the North British Housing Association acquired the hotel and the adjoining CWS warehouse and built 250 flats behind the retained Grainger-Dobson façade (HER 9156).
