Description
Percy Street is one of four original streets in Tynemouth, known in the C14 as 'North Middle Rawe'. The theatre has been a methodist church, schoolhouse and was originally built as a Wesleyan chapel. The building next door to the chapel was formerly an inn. Many buildings have seen little change in the last 50 years. The numbers included in this entry include the whole street apart from a few mid C20 houses on the south-west side of the street.

Good street with surrounding open space. Number 38 is the best example with least modernisation and good retention of original features. Land laid out around 1868 by the Duke of Northumberland. The first four homes were built at the seaward end of the street between 1868 and 1870. The rest followed piecemeal between 1868 and 1870. Five residents are recorded in 1871, many more in 1886. These include ship owners and lawyers. Three storey houses with dormers. The Duke of Northumberland laid the land for Percy Park out around 1868 and the majority of the street was built piecemeal throughout the 1870s. Five residents were recorded in the 1871 Census and many more in 1886 records; these were wealthy residents such as ship owners, lawyers, etc. Good street with great townscape due to open space. Exhibitions and entertainments were often held on this land, and in the times between these events, cattle were grazed there. No.38 is the best example of a property in the street with good retention of original features.

Shown on Ordnance Survey first edition. No. 6 Well Close is listed (HER 7353). Despite some modernisation, this is good survival of old Tynemouth Village (Tynemouth Farm), with the earliest parts of the street dating from the early to mid 18th century. Small, rural style cottages are unusual in Tynemouth, where most properties are large, grand townhouses. The picture shows the backs of the buildings, the front faces into Well Close, a yard that relates to the earlier form of the village.
