MEMORY OF EDWARD MOSELEY PERKINS OF BIRTLEY HALL LT. COL. 1ST A.D. BATT. D.R.V. 1874. Source Newcastle Daily Chronicle 23 June 1874. Edward Mosely Perkins (1821-71) came to Birtley in 1858 from London as a partner in the Iron Company and Birtley and Ouston Collieries . He took over Birtley Hall. He became a Councillor, Magistrate and Lord Mayor of Newcastle. He was a Captain in the Durham Rifle Corps, later Lieutenant Colonel. The Birtley Iron Company made the railings surrounding the monument, but they were removed during the Second World War. Pevsner (1953, p.51) described the statue as "the funniest monument of County Durham… as naïve as a Staffordshire figure".
