This smithy is not shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey plan, so was presumably built after 1855.
SITEASS
The smithy or forge was the workplace of a blacksmith or ironsmith, where iron was worked into useful objects such as weapons, armour in the Middle Ages and locks, hinges, spades and tools, iron horseshoes (machine-made horseshoes were introduced from USA in 1870s), grilles, gates, railings, metal parts for locomotives, coaches, waggons and carts. The blacksmith's raw material was wrought iron in bar form. The smithy comprised a hearth, bellows, anvil and bosh (quenching trough). A small forge had hand-operated bellows, a large industrial forge water-powered bellows, power hammer and shears (William Jones, 1996, Dictionary of Industrial Archaeology).

Description
The South Shields, Marsden & Whitburn Colliery Railway ran from Whitburn Colliery Junction, NZ 3622 6556 to the North Eastern Paper Mill (HER ref. 2496) at NZ 4106 6324. The line was built by the Harton Coal Company in 1873 and was then known as the Marsden Railway. By 1885 it was carrying passengers from Westoe Lane to Marsden. By 1895 it was connected to the Mineral Railway (HER ref. 2427) by a spur (HER ref. 2467). Unlike other Harton Coal Company lines it was not electrified in 1908. It had a station at Westoe Lane (HER ref. 2468) and another at Marsden (HER ref. 2485). Remains of the railway are visible as earthworks either side of the Coast Road adjacent and north of Marsden Quarry and limekilns.
SITEASS
Earthworks survive either side of the Coast Road adjacent and north of Marsden Quarry and limekilns (Rocket Green). South Tyneside Council is supporting proposals to restore the site and provide access and interpretation.

South Shields, Marsden & Whitburn Colliery Railway. Had a station at Westoe Lane (SMR 2468). By 1895 it was connected to the Mineral Railway (SMR 2427) by spur (SMR 2467). It also had a Station at Marsden (SMR 2485). It ran from Whitburn Colliery Junction, NZ 3622 6556 to the North Eastern Paper Mill (SMR 2496) at NZ 4106 6324. The line was built by the Harton Coal Company in 1873 and was then known as the Marsden Railway. In 1888 it was carrying passengers from Westoe Lane to Marsden. The coaching stock used was second-hand and often in poor condition. The coaches used by mineworkers had also been stripped of interior fixtures and fitted with wooden seats. The result was a bone shaking journey which earned the service the nickname 'The Marsden Rattler'. Unlike other Harton Coal Company lines it was not electrified in 1908. Site visit in April 2003 to a section of embankment at Mowbray Road. Substantial limestone walls on Mowbray Road are part of the railway bridge abutments which carried the road over the railway. Embankment proposed for a disabled training unit (ST/00211/03//DM).
