Shipbuilding Yard. Shown on the 2nd edition OS mapping to occupy part of the site of an earlier yard (SMR 2334) but it is not clear whether this represents continuity of use. Probably the site of J.P. Rennoldson and Sons, established in 1863. From the 1870s they built iron ships and in 1890 the yard was rebuilt for paddle and screw tugs. By 1916 there were four berths, the largest 230 feet long. The yard failed financially in 1929 {1}. J P Rennoldson set up a shipbuilding yard at an existing timber building yard in South Shields in 1863 (apparently part of Wallis' old yard - see HER 8408). His yard included a slipway for repairs. Iron shipbuilding began in the yard in the 1870s. The yard was remodelled in 1874 following a fire. In the 1890s, the yard was extensively adapted to build paddle and screw tugs, which were also fitted with engines at the yard. In 1895 the firm expanded into Readhead's old yard. Ships were mostly tugs and smaller vessels, including the Pilot Cutter "Protector" (1907) and the tugs "Champion" (1895) and "Nyora" (1919). By 1916, the yard had four berths, the longest being 230 feet long. The yard was closed following financial failure in 1929.

Rennoldsons’s Yard is the only yard occupied on the Lawe at this time. The slipway remains at the centre of the yard and an extensive building now lies along the eastern boundary of the site, presumably Rennoldson’s Engine shop. The location of building berths is not indicated.

A 400yd Rifle Range within Quarry (SMR 2390). This is not shown on the 1st edition OS mapping, so built after 1855. Its presence suggests that the quarry was out of use by 1895 (2nd edition OS survey).

Railway Spur which linked the Pontop and Jarrow Railway (SMR 1007) to the North Eastern Railway, Newcastle and South Shields Line (SMR 2509). Not shown on the 1st edition OS mapping, so built after 1855.

Railway, associated with the construction of the South Pier and Groyne, (SMRs 2429, 2429). Linked these sites with Trow Rocks Quarry and the Commissioner's Staiths, (SMRs 2390, 2434). The line was built by the Tyne Improvement Commission in 1854. It was first worked by horses, then from 1876 by a locomotive.
