Two parallel rows of square pits and mounds running north to south across Ryton Willows. Visible on the ground and on aerial photographs. The warden for Ryton Willows Nature Reserve says that they were defence pits to stop aircraft landing during World War Two.
SITEASS
Anti tank ditches were built to a range of standard specifications. In profile they were either V-shped, square-sided or asymmetrical. They were designed to immobilise the tank with an unclimable vertical face or (in the case of V-shaped ditches) to trap the tank nose-down. The recommended dimensions for a V-shaped ditch was 5.49m wide and 3.35m deep. Such ditches have now been backfilled but may show up as linear cropmarks on aerial photographs {Defence of Britain Handbook 1995, p86}.

Description
"On the Lawe Hill in 1798 some workmen employed on the grounds of Nicholas Fairles, Esq., found the remains of a Roman hypocaust, consisting of brick and dressed freestone; the lowest course of rough whinstone, “evidently brought from the shore, as the barnacles were still adhering to them”. The buildings seem to have been of a mixed character, some Roman, others of a later date. A gold coin of Marcus Aurelius, and several small brass coins from Claudius Gothicus to Valentinian were also found in the vicinity. This site is outside the northeastern corner of the site on the edge of the Lawe. It is suggested that it may have been the bathhouse or perhaps the bathhouse of a mansio.

SITEDESC
"On this same Lawe Hill in 1798, some workmen employed on the grounds of Nicholas Fairles, Esq., struck on the evident remains of a Roman hypocaust. A sketch taken at the time is in Mr. Fairles' possession, with some fragments of the masonry, which consisted of brick and dressed freestone intermingled; the lowest course was of rough whinstone, evidently brought from the shore, as the barnacles were still adhering to them. Mr. Fairles also possesses a beautiful gold coin of Marcus Aurelius, and several small brass from Claudius Gothicus to Valentinian. The buildings which it [the sketch] represents are all outside the station at its northeastern corner. They stand upon the edge of the Lawe… The buildings seem to have been of a mixed character, some Roman, others of a later date" {2}. This structure may have possibly have been the bathhouse or perhaps the bathhouse of a mansio {1}.
