SITEDESC
In 1935 R.H. Fisher bought Oldwell House (HER 1813) and its land and built a cinema on it as a replacement for the Gem. He commissioned Newcastle architect Robert Burke in February 1937. It was built of red brick and could seat 547 people. The auditorium was on a stadium plan with 373 stall seats and 174 in the circle. Entrance to the circle was by a curving staircase at the right of the foyer. Said to be one of the first rural cinemas to be equipped with Western Electric Mirrophonic sound. The projectors were Westars with Peerless Magnarcs. The colour scheme, by Alexander's of Newcastle, was described as "delightful and pleasing". The Rex was opened by the Rector of Winlaton on 22 November 1937. In 1954 the cinema was extended to the rear adding another 208 seats to the circle. In 1967 it became a bingo hall. Due for demolition in 2005.
