Description
Fieldwalking in 2005 retrieved a scatter of prehistoric flint tools (Neolithic and Bronze Age) including scrapers, flakes, cores and waste material. Geophysical survey of this field in 2004 had noted a "sinuous linear anomaly" and a possible line of pits ending in a semi-circular feature and two possible hut circles. Evaluation trenching recommended. A single sherd of medieval pottery (sandy white fabric with a dull light grey slip on the exterior. Probably part of a closed vessel such as a flagon).

SITEDESC
The Picture and Variety Palace was a temporary single storey building, 70 feet long by 45 feet wide, and constructed of timber with a corrugated iron roof. It was licenced from 12 November 1912 to Towyn Thomas (of the Imperial, Newburn, HER 12843). The cinema changed hands a number of times before 1919, and lessees included S.O. Armstrong and John Cheeseman. In July 1922 the hall was taken over by Charles Nicholl who renamed it the Imperial. On 12 December 1922 the building was destroyed by fire. In August 1924 Thomas Charlton of Sugley Villas, Lemington submitted plans for another corrugated iron cinema. This cinema was probably never built. There was certainly no building on the site by 1952 and the site was turned into a car park in the 1970s.
