Description
Large house, 1854-7 by A.B. Higham of Newcastle for Isaac Lowthian Bell, Washington chemical manufacturer. Additions of 1865-7 by Philip Webb. Red brick; ashlar and terracotta quoins and dressings. Welsh slate roof. Tall brick chimneys. Free Tudor style. Complicated plan with long domestic wings. Two storeys and attics. Interior has some original fittings but has lost the Turkish bath installed by Webb. This was the birthplace of Gertrude Bell, explorer and Middle Eastern expert. In 1891 Bell donated the house for housing "waifs and strays". It subsequently became the residential Washington Hall School, then a nursing home, now apartments [2003]. Shown as Washington House on 1st edition Ordnance Survey map and Dame Margaret's Home on second and third editions. LISTED GRADE 2
SITEASS
Pevsner - "Of modest size but in elaborate Elizabethan style, red brick with lots of stone and terracotta decoration and a big square tower. More notable are the extensions made in 1865-7 by Philip Webb: at the front an entrance porch, hall and dining room with bedrooms above; at the back a study, Turkish bath and storeroom with bedrooms above. The additions are important because it marks a development in Webb's work from the Gothic style towards the Domestic Revival. Bold assymmetrical design with a Gothic double-arched porch balanced by a steeply gabled bay with the wall cleverly canted under it and a great chimneystack of moulded brickwork, corbelled out from first-floor level, and lead facings to gables similar in detail to those Webb designed for the Gardener's Cottage, Arisaig House, Invernessshire (1863). Tall casements foreshadow his Red Barns, Redcar: the combination of Gothic and idiosyncratic features is further developed in the house on Palace Green, Kensington, that Webb built for Bell's relative-by-marriage, George Howard, in 1867-70".

This was the birthplace of Gertrude Bell (1868-1926) granddaughter of Sir Isaac, scholar, poet, historian, explorer and Middle Eastern expert. In 1891 Bell donated the house for housing "waifs and strays", on the condition that it was renamed after his wife Margaret. In 1910 the Hall became the North Branch HQ of Barnardo's. It subsequently became the residential Washington Hall School and NCB training centre, then a nursing home, now apartments [2003]. Description
Substantial stone retaining wall on north side of River Derwent, just south of the houses on River View/Morawe Crescent. Revealed during ground works in March 1998. A stone dam similar to that at Winlaton Mill was revealed at the same time on the south side of the river (in County Durham). Presumably the retaining walls were associated with the Steel Works and mill race (HER 1017) and Blackhall Mill itself (HER 3405).

Substantial stone retaining wall and structure on north side of River Derwent, just south of the houses on River View/Morawe Crescent. Revisited in April 2010. Only a small element of the stone structure is now visible, the rest is landscaped and grassed over. Ian Ayris thinks the visible structure is associated with water management of the mill race. The structure has a series of angled 'buttresses' pointing towards the river and some of the stones display a slot presumably for a timber beam of some sort. Local residents tell us that the steps on the other side of the river were utilised to form access into a concrete paddling pool in the 1950s. The steps and pool are no longer visible due to vegetation cover.
