Description
In 1824 John Brolinson was landlord at the Rose and Crown. Later converted into a house. Recorded in 2014 prior to demolition. The earliest fabric is the south wall (1.2m thick), which may relate to an entirely different 18th century building. In the 18th or early 19th century, four rooms were built. The next phase of development was the addition of a single storey extension to the east wall. The Rose and Crown ceased to operate some time between 1906 and 1914. In the 1920s or 1930s a structure on the south elevation was removed, the windows in the east wall of the extension were remodelled and a new fire surround was installed. A toilet was installed in the outhouse. The last modification was the installation of a bathroom. The building is shown on the tithe map of 1839. On the first edition OS map of 1854 the building is named as the Rose and Crown Inn. It is no longer named as a pub on the second edition revision of 1906, suggesting a change of use to residential. It is named Middle House on the OS map of 1960. Whellan's directory of 1856 lists Elizabeth Walker as victualler at the Rose and Crown. The directory of 1865 lists Edward Stout. The inn is not listed in Whellan's directory of 1894. Kelly's directory of 1906 names Thomas Worthington at the Rose and Crown. The inn is not listed after this date.

The inn is not listed in Whellan's directory of 1894. Kelly's directory of 1906 names Thomas Worthington at the Rose and Crown. The inn is not listed after this date. Middle House is two storeys with a piled tiled roof and two chimneys. The external walls are rendered and painted white. The west elevation has a central square-headed door with a slightly projecting moulded stone surround containing a decorative keystone. Either side of the doorway there are square windows, now boarded up. The first floor has two large rectangular windows. There are no sills or lintels and so the windows are probably later insertions. The south elevation (gable end) contains a blocked square-headed doorway with moulded stone surround. This is likely to be original. To the east of the doorway there is a small rectangular window of two panes. The roofline shows evidence of a single storey extension to the rear of the building. The original roofline has a wide coping covered with cement render and a kneeler where the original building ended. The east elevation is the single storey extension. Its pitched roof has been tied into the original roofline. There is a central door flanked by two square metal-framed windows of nine panes. This extension is shown on mapping from at least 1839. There are two brick-built outhouses with asbestos roof. One outhouse contains a toilet with high-level cistern labelled 'Darnley, Sunderland and South Shields Pattern' probably of 1920s date. The north elevation (gable end) has no features. It is thinner (0.6m thick) than the south wall and does not have a kneeler. Inside there are few features of interest apart from a fireplace with coloured tiles. This is probably early 20th century in date.

A row of four houses. Known as Paddy's Row after the Irish miner who lived at No. 1. Every Saturday night Paddy, an Irish miner, for drunk, and when the pubs closed he moved slowly and deliberatly along the street trailing his coat behind him. This was a recognised challenge to anyone in the village wanting to fight him for the right to live for a week in the first house in Paddy's Row. The house appeared to belong to no-one, but Paddy had taken posession of it and if anyone accepted the challenge and beat him, Paddy slept under the hedge.

Rainton Bridge Farm has been farmed by the Bailey family for 200 years. The building containing the village communal oven became the boiler house at the farm. It once had racing stables. Only working farm left in East Rainton. TWM suggest that the position of the farm in the village core may mean that the farm has medieval origins. In 2009 the farm comprised of a red brick farmhouse and modern farm sheds and small outbuildings over 0.24ha.
