The visual heart of the Conservation Area. The pond lies in a depression where there was once a well. In the 19th century a complex of houses known as 'The Cluster' were build along the eastern edge of the pond, probably back-to-back workers cottages. The pond was larger and less regular then (referred to as the Cleadon Lake). OS maps suggest that the pond was surrounded by earthen banks. The pond would have served travellers and water for stock.

Description
Attractive mid to late 19th century house that once possibly incorporated a butchers shop. A painted stone lintel above a blocked doorway on the southern gable is inscribed 'H Burdon Butcher'. The two storey house is double fronted with a full height timber re-clad bay to the left side and a new large window inserted on the ground floor to the right side. All the windows are replacements. The central door has a semi-circular fanlight and modelled brick arch. The house is constructed in discoloured whote brick with contrasting dark grey brick quoins, cills and window jambs. The range of brick buildings at the rear may be the butchers yard and slaughterhouse. A stone boundary wall continues north behind Grove House.

This may mean that the Tavern was a beerhouse (cottage with a room for selling beer) rather than an inn.

Description
Built in the 1920s as accomodation for staff working at Undercliff (HER 8163) for the Chapman family. Two blocks of single storey cottages with hipped roofs. Nos. 1 and 3 have added dormer windows and extensions. East Farm Mews (No. 4) has been extended to form an 'L' shape, almost doubling the footprint of the original building. The unmade drive from Sunniside Lane to the cottages still looks like a farm track, with hedges on either side.

SITEDESC
A two storey brick building on a stone plinth. The two bars were either side of the central door. At the rear was the landlord's accommodation. In 1897 Arthur Stockwell redesigned the pub for its owners Reid & Co. The façade has twin gabled pedimented dormer windows. Stockwell's interior had four main rooms with a small bottle and jug space, all served from a central semi-rectangular bar counter. The pub is now occupied by Karrol Marketing.
