What appears to be a square cropmark with three ditches around it. Selkirk suggests that it could be a Roman fort or signal station. He further suggests that the path which runs from the cropmark to Hillcrest stables (NZ 2161 5801 to NZ 2209 5836) could be the course of a Roman road, presumably on the basis that it is straight. The site lies 1km south of Washingwells Fort. The cropmark could equally be a late prehistoric or Romano-British enclosure. There was a cairn in this vicinity (HER 11237). There was also mining activity (HER 3753).

Probable rectilinear enclosure visible on aerial photographs. Not found during evaluation trenching in 2016 ahead of development of area.

Newcastle's first children's hospital, opened in 1863. Proved to be inadequate. Closed after John Fleming built a new children's hospital in Jesmond (HER 9055). A house is shown on the site Oliver's 1830 map, which may have been owned or occupied by John Steavenson, lessee of the Trustees of the Baptist Chapel, Tuthill Stairs (HER 6685). The OS 1896 10 feet = 1 mile map shows the hospital as a long narrow building running from the edge of the pavement back to a property boundary coming north from the Close. A warehouse was built on the site in 1903.

A stone cradle-shaped trough, after which the Cradlewell Public House was named. It was moved from its original position due to road alterations, firstly to Heaton Park then back to Jesmond Road.

A two-storey property whose ground floor and entrance was lower than the level of the road. Both number 2 and number 4 were single-roomed dwelling occupied by 2 or 3 adults. Mill House was a much taller structure, with four rooms, built into a steep bank. The occupant was Elizabeth Carr, recorded in the 1891 census as a 'bread sampler-baker' who worked at the nearby flour mill (HER 5161). In 1901 she was caretaker of the flour mill. In 1891 there were a total of 15 rooms occupied by 37 people, including a carter, a chain horse driver, an earthenware presser, two transferrers in an earthenware manufactory, a road paver, a blacksmith, a labourer. Behind Mill House was Dolman's Yard.

Culvert (or similar) formed of sandstone blocks and slabs found in the back garden of No. 10 in 2006 when the house owner was excavating a pond. The tunnel measuring 2 feet wide by 2 feet high and the top of the structure was around 4 feet below ground level. Probably industrial related as the site lies only 44m south of Henry Pit (HER 4181). The feature was covered over before it could be recorded.

Milepost of late C19/early C20 date, constructed of cast iron painted white with black lettering. The plaque is shield-shaped and bears the legend NEWCASTLE 4 NORTH SHIELDS 6 with a pair of opposing directional arrows. This is set on a circular shaft with the fixings for a lower rectangular and the makers plate below. Overall the milepost is c. 0.7m high.

HISTORY: the milepost was erected on an old route to Blyth and was cast by Smith Paterson Ltd. of Blaydon.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION DECISION:this late C19/early C20 milepost is recommended for designation for the following principal reasons:

* It is a well preserved and intact example
* It is an attractive piece of street furniture which has some design interest in its shield shape and opposing directional arrows.
* It remains in its original position on an old route to Blyth LISTED GRADE 2

Unveiled 11th August 1973 by Hugh Algnernon, 10th Duke of Northumberland. At the entrance to the park there is a stone monument with a steel plaque inside. "NEWBURN MEMORIAL PARK THIS MEMORIAL WAS UNVEILED ON 11TH AUGUST 1973 BY HUGH ALGERNON TENTH DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND K.G. IN MEMORY OF HIS BROTHER HENRY GEORGE ALAN, NINTH DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND, LIEUTENANT, THIRD BATTALION GRENADIER GUARDS KILLED IN ACTION AT PECQ 21ST MAY 1940". The plaque has now gone.

Shown on a photograph in North Shields Local Studies Library. A horse trough with incised lettering. "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY FROM LONGBENTON URBAN DISTRICT EUROPEAN WAR 1914-19 THE GIFT OF MRS RW MARTIN RHONDDA HOUSE, LONGBENTON".

Commonwealth War Commissions Grave. "BURIED IN THIS CHURCHYARD". Lists two names and shows the badge of the Royal Garrison Artillery in relief.
