c.1908. Artist unknown. Frieze above entrance archways to Central Station. Portrait busts carved in relief in roundels, 80cm in diameter. The relief head of Edward VII lies in-between those of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Victoria and Albert were part of the original design for the station which opened in 1850. The relief of Edward VII was probably added to commemorate his visit to Newcastle in July 1906 when he unveiled a statue of his mother Queen Victoria and opened the new Royal Victoria Infirmary and an extension to Armstrong College.

Description
1966 by Hans Schwarz. A green-black bronze female figure, 2.6m high, holding a backet containing chickens on her head. The statue stands in a flower bed to one side of the Forum shopping centre. Commissioned by J. Seymour Harris and Partners, developers of the shopping centre. Originally sited on a low brick base it was moved to its current location in 1993. The figure is a female Roman-era peasant, the site lying close to the east end of Hadrian's Wall. The statue was deliberately rough, hand-finished and has a patchy nature to the colour, to give an impression of age. The stoicism of her pose contrasts with the flapping hens in the basket. Reasons for being listed: aesthetic quality, material, historic interest (Schwarz draws attention to the subjugation of the local population by Emperor Hadrian) and contribution to the public realm. Details
Sculpture, 1966 by Hans Schwarz, commissioned by J Seymour Harris and Partners.
DESCRIPTION: the sculpture is cast in bronze and is green-black in colour. It stands on a square, bronze base, now set in a flowerbed. The statue itself depicts a bare-foot, female figure from Roman times wearing a long robe reaching down to her calves with sleeves covering her arms and a shawl wrapped round her head covering her hair. She stares straight ahead and her right arm is raised to balance a large circular, woven basket on her head. The basket contains four live hens which lean out over the edge of the basket.

Description
Once part of the Jarrow Hall (HER 8070) Estate, which was itself former monastic land. The land between the hall and the church (HER 1229) was given as a memorial park in the early 20th century. The park is surrounded by brick and stone walls, with a terraced area leading up to the hall. The park has concrete pavers and brick kerbs to the paths. The grass is well maintained and there are timber and metal benches. The play area is on tarmac. There are mature trees on all sides of the park and across the northern edge of the play area, which weakens the relationship with Jarrow Hall. At the north-east corner there is a timber pergola and a formal arrangement of paths. Along the path to the church are reproduction Victorian-style lamp standards set in concrete bases with inappropriate modern lamp heads. To the west of Drewett's Park is a tarmac coach park.

Description
The doll (the fifth in North Shields) takes the form of a fisherwomen carrying a basket, rather than a ship's figurehead, was carved for the Corporation by Robert Thompson Ltd. in 1958. It has two mice carved into it - Thompson's trademark. In 1986 the sculpture was covered in a thick layer of brown paint, which has obscured the detail {1}. The fifth North Shields wooden dolly was a tribute to May Spence (the sculptor of the fourth wooden dolly at Customs House Quay, HER 4494) by the civic authorities, funded by the Mayor of Tynemouth. It was unveiled on 22nd October 1958 May Spence's 100th birthday. The fifth dolly was carved by Robert Thompson Ltd of Kilburn in Yorkshire. The two small mice signify 'industry in quiet places'. A tradition of 144 years was broken when this dolly was placed at Northumberland Square rather than Customs House Quay. This dolly is carved in mahogany. She was restored in 1986 {2}.
