On the site of the old Mill Inn. As a Ridley, Cutter & Firth pub in the 1890s, adulterated gin was being sold at the Millstone. There are remnants of an earlier building on the site, possibly relating to the previous pub or industry at the location. The present building was constructed for brewer and hotelier JH Graham in 1900. James Cakett designed it. Red brick with stone dressings. The main façade has a decorative gable which has lost its ball finials. A window has replaced the original niche. Cackett designed a single bar counter in the public bar with hatches into three sitting rooms. There was also a billiard or club room on the first floor. JH Graham went bankrupt and the pub passed to James Deuchar, then Newcastle Hotels Ltd, then to Bass in 1954.

There has been a public house on the site of the Brandling Villa Hotel since at least the 1880s, when the landlord was convicted for permitting gambling and drunkenness. The original pub was a two storey stone building with the tap room and public bar to the left and right of a central door. The present Brandling Villa Hotel was built in 1900-1903 for W B Reid and Company, to the designs of Arthur Stockwell. The two storey sandstone building (which Lynn Pearson says resembles a small scale baroque town hall) has three large bay windows on its eastern entrance front and two doors each with heavy door surrounds. The pilasters of these door surrounds rise the full height of the building and culminate in small ball finial capped gables. A balustrade above the ground floor follows the curves of the bay windows and creates three first floor balconies above the bay windows. The pub consisted of a large public bar, two sitting rooms and a bottle and jug.
