Description
A shipbuilding yard is shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey plan on the north bank of the River Wear between Hylton and Southwick and immediately to the east of the Hylton Dene Burn. At this time, the yard incorporated a saw pit and a small adjacent structure, with another building to the east. The eastern edge of the site sits against salt marsh and mud flats, and it would seem probable that some consolidation of the yard must have been carried out prior to its use as a shipyard. The yard had gone by the time of the Second Edition Survey, physically swept away by the development of the Castletown Steelworks immediately to the west, the opening of the Hylto, Southwick and Monkwearmouth Railway to the north and the associated canalization of the course of the Hylton Dene Burn. The site of the yard has reverted to salt marsh.

A shipbuilding yard is shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey on the north bank of the River Wear between the settlements of Hylton and Southwick and immediately to the east of the Hylton Dene Burn. At this time, the yard incorporated a saw pit and a small adjacent structure, with another building to the east. The eastern edge of the site sits against salt marsh and mud flats, and it would seem probable that some consolidation of the yard must have been carried out prior to its use as a shipyard.
The yard had gone by the time of the Second Edition Survey, physically swept away by the development of the Castletown Steelworks immediately to the west, the opening of the Hylton, Southwick and Monkwearmouth Railway to the north and the associated canalization of the course of the Hylton Dene Burn.
Map Evidence
First Edition Twenty Five Inches to One Mile Ordnance Survey 1857, Sheet VIII.9
A shipyard lies on the eastern edge of the Hylton Burn as it first meanders and then runs through intertidal mudflats into the River Wear. The yard contains a saw pit with a small associated structure, the function of which is not described, with another building to the east straddling a fenced compound. Land to the east of the yard consists of mudflat and salt marsh. It would seem very likely that consolidation of the area of the yard must have been carried out prior to its use for shipbuilding.
Second Edition Six Inches to One Mile Ordnance Survey 1898, Sheet VIII.SW
The yard has gone, swept away by the development of the Castletown Steelworks immediately to the west of the Hylton Burn Dene and the insertion of the Hylton, Southwick and Monkwearmouth Railway, tracking the riverside to the north. The Hylton Dene Burn has been canalized as a result of these developments and the mudflats along the riverside turned into a timber yard, to maintain the water content of imported timber. The site of the yard has reverted, once again, to salt marsh {3}.
