'In the night of Tuesday last, during a violent gale at east...the MARY, Hutton, all of Sunderland, in ballast, were driven on shore on the rocks to the southward of that port, and the crews with difficulty saved. As soon as information reached the Barracks of the vessels coming ashore, Lieut.-Col. Austin ordered out the 97th Regiment to assist in dragging the life-boats to any point where they might be wanted...The MARY has since gone to pieces, and the other two vessels are in a bad state - the high tides and heavy sea having driven them up against the banks.' 1829 wreck of English sloop which grounded on the bar and subsequently stranded after colliding with the pier at Sunderland during a gale. Having been driven back to her original departure port of Sunderland, bound for Blyth with limestone, she was a wooden sailing vessel. `The sloop BEE of Blyth, laden with limestone for Sunderland to the first named place, was obliged to put back for Sunderland on the night of Tuesday se'nnight, though she only left it in the morning of that day having lost the whole of her canvas at sea in a most tremendous wind. On her return she struck upon the Bar and then drove amongst the framework of the new pier. The crew were dragged to shore with great difficulty by means of ropes: the vessel has since gone to pieces. Too great praise cannot be given to Mr Martin Douglass, coalfitter, for his exertions in saving the crew...The BEE was the property of Sir M W Ridley, Bart.' (Durham County Advertiser)
